In May 2011, Charles Biétry, then boss of Al Jazeera Sport (now beIN Sports) had borrowed a discreet entry from the law firm Clifford Chance to submit his offer on football rights for the period 2012-2016, in the nose and in the beard of Canal +, who believed himself to be the only applicant.
As a result, the channel had obtained part of the rights to the L1 for 150 million euros and, in the process, had bought the international rights to the competition, those of the L2, the Champions League and the Spanish championship.
