5 Facts About Babies (Walla! | News System)

An expert in biological evolution argues that there is an evolutionary reason for parents to choose unusual names for their babies - so it is not their fault at all.

Dr. Mitchell Newbury is a biologist who recently turned his attention to naming trends. He mainly examined why some names survive and become popular - and why some of them die so quickly.

According to Dr. Newberry, when a new name rises in popularity, many parents prefer Not to choose it for their baby, and look for rare and special names to make them stand out - a phenomenon called "negative frequency dependent selection".

The expert, from the University of Michigan, examined a database of names given to infants in the United States over the past century to research common names and discover the selection process. He argues that as names become more popular, parents prefer to find unique names Evolutionary. In a conversation with News Medical he said: "There is usually pressure for conformity, but my research shows that the variety of names is due to pressures against conformity.

For sex to thrive, it must practice anti-conformity.

In humans, this is usually done using the names we choose for our children. "

  • Hard to watch: Parents began throwing babies into the air in a particularly horrific ticking challenge

  • "I'm her mother, but people think we're sisters. I'm dying for it.

He describes the process of popularity of the names as cyclical.

According to him, unique names sometimes get popular and then parents start looking for other names and lower back the popularity of common names until they just disappear.

"Names rise to the top of the popularity table, but they will not be there long before their popularity completely fades. This is really a case study showing how huge growth cycles can develop anti towards common types and promote diversity. If people are always thirsty for the newest thing, new things will always be created "Every time something new is created, it is promoted, and so rarer things go up more frequently and you have more diversity in the population. Those who gain popularity will not gain it in the long run."

This is bad news for David and Tamar, as they are among the most popular names in Israel as of 2020 - and according to Dr. Newberry will not be relevant any time soon. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the most common first name given to children in 2020 in Israel is Muhammad - 2,396 babies were named after him.The next names on the list are Yosef, which named 1,857 children (1,176 Jews and 656 Muslims) and Ariel - given to 1,802 Jewish children, about a third of whom are girls.Among the Jews, the most common name that can be built is Tamar (1,116 Babies) and the most common name for boys is David (1,536 babies) .Here is the full list:
