Celebrities and fitness gurus have sworn off the white sweetener - and replaced it with healthier alternatives.

1 / 8Very few know it, but vegans have valued it for a long time: rice syrup.

At first glance, it has the same consistency and color as honey, but it is more transparent.

Nevertheless, you can spice up your breakfast with rice syrup.

Although it is a little less sweet than table sugar, it has a slightly caramel-like taste.

It also contains many minerals such as magnesium, iron or calcium and, thanks to its multiple sugars, keeps sugar emissions low.

2 / 8Coconut blossom sugar, also known as coconut or palm sugar, is already a star in the vegan and paleo communities thanks to its low glycemic index.

It is therefore particularly recommended for people with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease.

The coconut sugar is made from the nectar of the coconut palm and is also rich in various minerals.

Nevertheless, it does not taste like coconut, but also has a caramel note.

You can use it 1:1 like brown sugar.

3 / 8Anyone who has ever been to the USA or Canada knows it mostly on pancakes for breakfast: maple syrup.

As a healthy alternative, it is very popular with vegans.

It is obtained from Canadian maple trees and boiled down as juice.

It is considered a natural sweetener and is available in different quality grades (AA, A, B, C, D).

Maple syrup is also valued for its many minerals and trace elements.

In addition, substances contained in it should have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect.

4 / 8Xylitol was originally extracted from birch wood, which is why it is also known as birch sugar.

As the health insurance company AOK further informs, however, it is now made from leftover corn cobs, straw or other wood.

The sugar alcohol has significantly fewer calories than sugar.

5 / 8In addition to xylitol, erythritol is one of the sugar alcohols and is used as a sugar substitute.

It also looks like household sugar and tastes sweet.

It occurs naturally in cheese, corn or fruit and is obtained through fermentation.

Erythritol also contains hardly any calories and does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels.

Therefore, it is recommended for diabetics or overweight.

However, it does not sweeten as much as xylitol or normal table sugar.

6 / 8Agave syrup is a sweetener obtained from the agave plant.

The same applies here as with concentrated apple juice: you should consume the product in moderation because it mainly consists of fructose.

However, agave syrup has fewer calories than sugar, making it a better diet companion.

Buying agave syrup is also rather harmful for the environment, also because of the long transport routes.

You don't want to do without agave syrup?

In this case, it is best to use an organic product.

7 / 8Honey has been considered a valuable food and medicine for as long as anyone can remember.

It is produced by bees from the nectar collected from flowers or from the excretion products of various species of lice, known as honeydew.

Honey is 80 percent pure sugar.

Today it is used as a sweetener and has been praised for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects on various diseases since ancient times.

8 / 8Stevia is obtained from the South American plant Stevia rebaudiana (also called "sweet herb" or "honey herb") and is also a natural and popular sweetener.

It consists largely of the so-called stevioglycosides and has neither calories nor sugar.

Stevia is therefore suitable for diabetes, insulin resistance and even to prevent tooth decay.

But be careful: the sweetener is up to 300 times sweeter than conventional table sugar.

First low carb, now common household sugar: anyone who wants to be healthy swears by the sugar-free nutritional trend this year.

But what some smile at, can actually have serious and, above all, positive consequences for the body and one's own health when excessive sugar consumption is used.

The blood sugar stabilizes, you become more balanced - and possibly even lose weight.
