A passenger on a cruise ship has fallen into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Mallorca.

Corresponding media reports confirmed the Azamara shipping company to SPIEGEL.

The company did not want to confirm reports that it was a woman "out of respect for the privacy of the family".

A search has since been called off without success.

According to the announcement, the “Azamara Quest” had left the port of Barcelona and was on its way to Malaga when “a guest went overboard” “around 75 nautical miles off the coast of Mallorca” at around 2 a.m. on Sunday night.

The Spanish sea rescue service called for help searched for the guest on the water and via helicopters, and the crew of the "Azamara Quest" were also involved with lifeboats.

"But at 5:20 p.m., the sea rescue service stopped the search," the shipping company said.

The "Azamara Quest" meanwhile continued its journey according to plan and reached the port of Malaga on Monday.

More information about the missing guest or the circumstances of the incident on board the cruise ship were not initially known.
