In the trial surrounding the accidental death of an eight-year-old after an illegal car race, the Aachen regional court sentenced the two accused to youth imprisonment.

A 20-year-old was sentenced to three years and nine months for taking part in a motor vehicle race resulting in death, and a 21-year-old was sentenced to three years and six months for participation in a race and involuntary manslaughter, a court spokesman said.

The chamber considered it proven that the two accused had raced on a country road in the Eifel in August 2020.

The 20-year-old's car collided head-on with another car while overtaking in a curve.

An eight-year-old girl, her mother and a man were seriously injured.

The child died in a hospital three days later.

The defendant was also seriously injured.

With the verdict, the court remained below the demand of the public prosecutor.

She had initially accused the two men of murder and attempted murder, but moved away from this during the course of the trial and demanded five years of youth imprisonment in her plea.
