Screenshot of the university's website from Friday morning: Teaching was initially unaffected by the failure
The University of Education in Freiburg has been offline for days due to a suspected cyber attack.
The university shut down its servers for security reasons due to a "serious IT security incident at Pentecost," the social media team said on Thursday on the university's Instagram channel.
The incident had already been communicated to the employees and students of the university via the accounts of the student councils and private e-mails, press spokeswoman Helga Epp told SPIEGEL.
Because of the disruption, the internet, e-mail systems, telephony and internal networks could not be used.
She didn't know anything about the background to the attack, said Epp.
The only thing that is clear is that there was a hacker attack.
Currently, all around 1200 mobile devices would be set up again.
Until all systems are cleaned, no device should be connected to the network.
It is currently unclear when the problem will be resolved.
"Error: network timeout"
However, IT achieved its first success on Friday afternoon: the university's website is accessible again.
Previously, users only received an error message: "The website may be temporarily unavailable, please try again later."
Teaching was initially unaffected by the failure: the university was on the Pentecost break anyway.
On Monday, the presence operation for the almost 5000 students should continue - albeit in the same way, said Epp.
More than playing a presentation on a company laptop is currently not possible.
