According to initial information, a perpetrator injured four people with a knife at the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences.
"The perpetrator is safe," wrote the police on Friday on the short message service Twitter.
The alleged attacker was overwhelmed by students in a lecture hall and held until the police arrived, said a police spokesman for the dpa news agency.
Accordingly, the man is a lone perpetrator.
It is still unclear whether he himself is or was a student at the university.
According to initial findings, the man went into the university building around 3:30 p.m. and attacked people in the corridors.
Then he headed for a larger lecture hall.
There he was overpowered.
