A man who is said to have disposed of five kittens in the garbage on Crete faces a fine of up to 250,000 euros.
The 59-year-old has to answer in court for killing animals.
This was reported by the newspaper »Kathimerini«.
The man is said to have thrown the five kittens into a garbage can on an expressway in early June.
A short time later, a woman discovered the animals and took them to her.
However, they were so small that only one survived.
The woman reported the incident to the police, who identified the alleged perpetrator using surveillance camera footage.
The man is now threatened with a fine of 50,000 euros per kitten, a total of 250,000 euros, the newspaper reports.
Greece had massively tightened its animal welfare law in 2021.
Citizens can now submit complaints of animal cruelty online.
Fines and prison sentences for killing and cruelty to animals have also been increased.
In addition, animal owners are now obliged to castrate their animals.
