He was on stage for more than 60 years, and in the 1970s he became a hit legend with the hit "Ein Bett im Kornfeld".

Jürgen Drews has now announced the end of his career.

In the ARD show "Die Große Schlagerstrandparty" by Florian Silbereisen on Saturday evening and in an interview with the newspaper "Bild am Sonntag", the 77-year-old said he only wanted to appear live on stage occasionally this year.

After that it's over for him.

"It's time to put my private life first," Drews told Bild am Sonntag.

He explained the withdrawal with his health and advancing age.

"I'm not as resilient as I used to be, and I notice that it's incredibly good for me to be at home." At the end of 2020 he indicated to the magazine "Gala" that he was thinking about the end of his career.

About a year ago, Drews announced that he had polyneuropathy, an incurable nervous disease.

He has no pain and a mild form of nervous disease, but his body and condition are changing.

Drews announced that he would no longer appear at Ballermann in Mallorca either.

He now lacks the energy for the long stage appearances.

"I used to just put it away, sometimes going to bed at five in the morning and flying back to Germany at eight," Drews said.

Because of his live performances there, he was nicknamed "King of Mallorca".

He wishes that his friend, the singer Mickie Krause, would bear the name in the future.

At Florian Silbereisen, Drews said he was going without complaining: "I'm fine.

So if not now, then when?”

Above all, he wanted to spend his days with his wife Ramona and their dogs, he told BamS.

He's looking forward to everything he didn't have time for before, like his garden or documentaries on TV.

"This is a great gift for me," said Drews.
