Dry sponge cake becomes juicy again: with Grandma's can trick

Grandma already knew one way to make cake edible again: Spread a piece of dry cake with jam, butter or cream cheese.

This enhances the taste and the cake is moist again.

This also works on a large scale: If a whole sponge cake has turned out to be too dry, for example because it was in the oven for too long, you can cut it in half horizontally and spread the respective layers with jam, buttercream or cream cheese.

Then put the other cake pieces back on.

Another tip for making dry sponge cake juicy again is grandma's can trick.

You need an airtight container, preferably made of metal, such as a cookie jar.

Put the sponge cake or, depending on the size, pieces of it in there for one day.

If the cake is very dry, it also helps if you add a piece of apple.

It releases moisture, which the cake can in turn absorb.

Try it out, the sponge cake will taste fresh again.

The same trick also works for biscuits and Christmas cookies that have become too hard.

This is how dry yeast cake becomes juicy again

Unfortunately, the can trick only works with sponge cakes, not with yeast cakes.

If you've made crumble cake, you can save it by melting butter - it's mess-free in the microwave - and spreading it over the crumble while it's still warm.

Wait half a day for the crumble cake to soak up the butter and it'll be fresh again.

Save a dry cake: pierce and baste

Another method is to pierce the cake several times with a fork or skewer.

Then pour a little apple juice, cocoa, coffee, wine or rum (if no children are eating) over the pastry, depending on your taste.

This allows the liquid to soak in and the cake becomes juicy again.

After all, this principle also works with Poke Cake, only here the holes in the chocolate cake are filled with pudding.

If all the tricks don't help anymore, you can always process the dry cake further: For example, sponge cake can be turned into a delicious tiramisu.

Instead of the usual ladyfingers, just use the sliced cake.

Or you can make cake pops out of them without baking.

The cake batter is crumbled and formed into small balls together with other ingredients, which are put on wooden skewers and covered with chocolate.
