It was the triumph of the “
moderates
”: the “
opportunists
”, or “
government republicans
” as they defined themselves.
They reigned over French political life during the years 1880-1890: those when, after the failure of the conservative dissolution attempted by Marshal Mac Mahon in 1877 (the President of the monarchist Republic having called on the people to overthrow the majority on the left and having had to resign after its confirmation by the voters), the Republic became firmly rooted in our political life and in our constitutional practices.
It was then the golden age of "
moderate republicans, but not moderately republicans
", to use Waldeck-Rousseau's word.
