At a rubbish dump, one suspects one thing above all – rubbish.

In Argentina, people have now found something else: namely dollar bills.

"A friend got out of his truck and saw a perfectly clean $100 bill on the ground," a man who was one of the first to collect the bills at the Las Parejas landfill told AFP.

Together with five friends, he collected as many bills as possible.

"It was like a game of who finds the most," he continued.

"The six of us collected $10,000." A young man even found $25,000 at the rubbish dump the next day.

According to reports in online networks, it is said to have been the estate of a lady who kept the money in the false bottom of a cupboard.

Authorities have since banned access to the dump.

Sustained inflation in Argentina

Argentina is suffering from chronic inflation.

Many people don't take their savings to the bank, but keep them at home in dollars.

After the incident became known, numerous memes were published - including those of President Alberto Fernández and Vice President Cristina Kirchner searching for green bills in the garbage to boost the country's economy.
