(ANSA-AFP) - KUALA LUMPUR, 01 AUG - Australia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan have expressed interest in hosting the Asian Women's Cup in 2026. This was announced by the Asian Football Confederation.

The organization "will work with all associations to deliver the necessary documentation in accordance with the application procedure".

The chosen country will be announced next year.

India hosted this year's Women's Asian Cup, which was won by China and expanded from 8 to 12 teams.

The 2026 edition "should build a solid foundation for the tournament," the AFC said.

The candidacy of Saudi Arabia is singular, a country where social and moral norms oblige women not to interact with other men outside their domestic walls, except in certain circumstances or designated areas.

Meanwhile, an important page is being written in the history of football in Japan: Yoshimi Yamashita has in fact become the first female professional referee in the history of the country.

In May, 36-year-old Yamashita has been chosen as one of the great women who will referee at the next World Championships in Qatar, together with Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart and Rwandan SalimaMukansaga.
