When you leaf through the new crime releases, you think you already know everything.

But with “The Other Sister” the Swedish authors set the bar very high.

My book tip.

With around 60,000 inhabitants, Karlstad is the largest city in Värmland and, according to the tourism sites on the Internet, also the city with one of the highest number of hours of sunshine a year.

But things are anything but sunny in the detective novel “The Other Sister” by Peter Mohlin and Peter Nyström.

The main character John Adderley also has to survive some of his darkest hours here.

I briefly mentioned the title in our book recommendations for this summer.

And rightly so.

Mohlin & Nystrom "The Other Sister": About the Book

John Adderley is investigating his second case in Karlstad, Sweden.

The CEO of a successful new dating app is found murdered.

The sister of the dead quickly becomes the focus of investigations.

Both women have always had a difficult relationship, characterized by envy and dependency.

The deeper John delves into the sisters' past, the clearer it becomes that the murder is just one piece in the puzzle of a crime on a much larger scale.

As John follows the trail, the old life he thought he left behind in the US catches up with him.

And with deadly force.

HarperCollins

I always find it exciting how couples of authors manage to write an exciting thriller together.

Here Peter Mohlin and Peter Nystrom are no exception.

Camilla Läckberg and Henrik Fexeus have also brought great excitement to paper in brilliant co-work with "Schwarzlicht".

The chapters in "The Other Sister" read quickly, the twists that the story takes raise the bar for the term "suspense" a good bit higher.

"The Other Sister": Terrific continuation of the Karlstad series

"The Other Sister" is a skilful second part of the Karlstad series about the investigator John Adderley, who is investigating as Fredrik Adamsson for the local police in Sweden as part of a witness protection program.

Had he hoped to have left his past in the USA, in the course of the crime novel he is confronted with the harsh reality that will profoundly influence not only his life and his further decisions.

The entire constellation of characters in the thriller convinced me.

On the one hand the two sisters, who made me think a little of "Beauty and the Beast", but above all John Adderley, who is trying to gain a foothold in Sweden with a large backpack full of personal problems.

Not only the painful and rare contact with his niece, but also the momentous decisions to which he is exposed in the second volume make him appear very vivid and real.

Piece by piece, page by page, I, the reader, am introduced deeper into the story.

Putting it down has only been possible on rare occasions.

Writing is really in the blood of the author duo.

Here, too, I would say that the construction of cliffhangers, short, tense sentences alternating with longer descriptions, almost "screams" for a film adaptation.

Peter Nyström has made a name for himself as a director and screenwriter.

If that's not a little hint.

I'd be right there.

Mohlin & Nystrom "The Other Sister": My conclusion

Even if the plot is extremely exciting and develops chapter by chapter, the inclined reader should also have read the first volume.

Here John's history is well explained and leaves fewer question marks.

In terms of language and tension, however, "The Other Sister" clearly scores points.

I'm hoping for a sequel here too.
