(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 02 - The United States killed Al Qaeda's leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, in that was the first operation by American forces in Afghanistan since leaving the country a year ago.
Al-Zawahri was killed with a drone in the course of an operation conducted by the CIA in Kabul, in the wealthy neighborhood of Sherpur frequented by the Taliban.
It is precisely italebans who condemn the operation which, in their opinion, was forbidden by the Doha agreement.
"We strongly condemn the attack which is a clear violation of international principles and the Doha agreement. These actions are against the interests of the United States, Afghanistan and the region," the Taliban said in a statement.
Al-Zawahri, one of the masterminds of the September 11 attacks, had taken over the reins of
terrorist organization in 2011 after the killing of Osama bin Laden, of whom he was the right-hand man for years.
For Biden, the dial-Zawahri killing is a big blow to terrorism, which has come as the president is in trouble in polls and struggling with various crises, from the war in Ukraine to the possible visit of the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
The "successful" operation was conducted over the weekend and, according to the administration, caused no civilian casualties.
Bidenha followed the raid from the White House, where he finds himself in isolation due to a relapse to Covid.
"The raid was a success in counter-terrorism efforts. It was the result of hundreds of hours of intelligence over many years," says Mick Mulroy, formerly of the CIA.
speaking to the New York Times.
"He probably thought we would never find him. But he was wrong," Mulroy added.
Al-Zawahri was on the FBI's Most Wanted List and the US authorities had placed a $ 25 million bounty on his head.
The possible death of al-Zawahri has been speculated for years.
The US announcement now puts an end to the rumors.
