Flash floods swept away hikers and triggered evacuations across the western United States on a weekend marked by heavy rains.

Torrential rains fell across the western United States forcing motorists to leave their vehicles.

“Turn back (…) when you encounter flooded roads.

Most of the flood-related deaths happen in vehicles,” said the NWS, the US weather service.

In Dallas, Texas, flash flood warnings were issued and many people were forced to evacuate their homes.

In Utah, a woman has been missing since Friday after being swept away by a flood in Zion National Park.

These spectacular floods took place after heavy rains in the southwestern United States, affected for more than twenty years by a persistent drought.

However, far from relieving the dry soil, the water from these rains pours out in a short period of time and flows "rather than being really absorbed by the soil", explains Chris Rasmussen, a member of the American weather services ( NWS).

North Texas and parts of Mississippi could even still receive up to 18 cm of rain this week.
