(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 26 - Undisputed protagonist of the history of the Italian Church of the last forty years, refined theologist and distinguished biblical scholar, tireless pastor who had chosen dialogue as an instrument of his ecclesial action: this was Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, a Jesuit, Archbishop of Milan from 1980 to 2002, whose 10th anniversary will be celebrated next August 31st.
The name of Cardinal Martini also remains linked to one of the most significant pages in the history of Italy.
It was June 13, 1984: in the Archbishopric of Milan a stranger left three big bags full of weapons.
It was the arsenal of the "Communist Revolutionary Committees", a left-wing terrorist group, considered contiguous to the Red Brigades, which in the years of lead had signed sensational acts of blood.
The arsenal was given to Cardinal Martini to signify the surrender of the terrorists and the end of the armed struggle, but also to solicit a mediation of the Church for a "human, social and political reconciliation".
