"I think they just want to divert people's attention from real problems like the economic problems in Estonia," says Mihhail, a Russian-speaking Estonian.

The Estonian government has demolished several Soviet-era monuments to the glory of the Red Army.

The aim for the country is to cleanse its national memory as it condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine last February.

The destruction took place despite the protests of the Russian-speaking minority, which represents nearly 24% of the Estonian population.

"It's a matter of sensitivity and memory, especially for older people," says Manus, a Russian-speaking Estonian.

Latvia also destroyed a Soviet monument dating from the Second World War in Riga on August 25.

This iconic monument commemorated the victory of the Russian army against Nazi Germany.

It was almost 79 m high.

The Russian-speaking minority opposed this demolition because this building represented a symbol for the pro-Russians who met each year.

Latvia and Estonia share a border of several hundred kilometers with Russia and have never stopped condemning the actions of the Kremlin since the beginning of the war.
