Against the background of the energy crisis, it makes sense to use less hot water.

This is how much money you can save when cleaning and in the bathroom.

Kassel – In view of the rising energy prices, many households in Germany have to reckon with very high additional payments.

Saving water, especially heated water, is an effective way to reduce household expenses.

Because according to the Lower Saxony consumer center, around 14 percent of the energy is used to heat water.

With a few tricks, however, water can be effectively saved when cleaning and in the bathroom, which not only protects the wallet but also the environment.

Save water in the household: Use the dishwasher and washing machine effectively

Turning on half-full dishwashers or washing machines is a huge waste of energy and water.

As a result, the device runs much more frequently and uses the full amount of warm water each time.

Consumers should therefore ensure that they always store the devices completely.

This not only saves water, but also energy.

Lower temperature

settings are also

less noticeable on the bill.

"With 160 washes per year at 40 instead of 60 degrees and doing without prewash and dryer, you can save around

110 euros

and avoid 250 kilograms of CO2," according to the environmental protection organization WWF.

Some devices even have a

savings or eco program

.

This requires less water and electricity.

"With 160 dishwasher cycles in the economy program instead of hand washing, you avoid around 80 kilograms of CO2 per year and save around

35 euros

," says the WWF.

Saving water when cleaning: This trick saves money

Depending on the location, the price of a liter of water in Germany is currently around half a cent.

Filling a

10 liter cleaning bucket

therefore costs about

5 cents

.

A high-pressure cleaner has already lost the same amount of water after one to two minutes, a garden hose usually after less than a minute.

Up to 20 liters flow out of a tap every minute.

If you want to save water when cleaning, you should scrub your terrace wet, wash your car with a sponge and not wash the dishes individually, but clean the full sink.

Depending on how much time you normally spend cleaning with a high-pressure cleaner, garden hose or tap, you can save a lot here.

For example, a ten-minute

car wash

for 50 cents turns into a

two-time car wash for 0.25 cents

if you refill your 5-liter bucket after the first run.

Anyone who buys a no-rinse cleaner for vehicles even saves rinsing off the soap.

Save water by using less water to flush the toilet

As the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection explains, an average of almost 40 liters, i.e. around 30 percent of daily drinking water consumption, is used to flush the toilet.

In older toilets, around 9 to 14 liters flow through the toilet bowl per flush, with 6 to 9 liters being sufficient.

If a suitable toilet bowl and a suitable cistern are available - this can be seen from the test number with a 6 or 61 at the end - a lot of water can be saved here.

Saving hot water when showering: There is potential for savings in the bathroom too

Save water and energy by lowering the water temperature.

It sounds uncomfortable at first.

But this tip does not mean taking a colder shower.

Instead, as NDR explains, you prevent water that has been heated to up to 70 degrees from being mixed with cold water in order to reach the desired temperature.

If you lower the hot water temperature on the boiler

, in the settings for the

heating

or the

instantaneous water heater

, less cold water is simply added until the desired temperature is reached.

How much money is left ultimately depends on how warm your shower is and how high the hot water temperature is set on your heating or boiler.

If you also use an

energy-saving shower head

, which costs around 20 euros, you can save up to 50 percent water and thus up to 50 percent of the costs for shower water.

While standard shower heads pour out 12 to 15 liters per minute, good economy shower heads only deliver six to seven liters.

They usually cause the usual jet pattern, i.e. the water pressure, although less water is used.
