The Venice International Film Festival started with the opening film »White Noise« and a video speech by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy called on the guests of the 79th edition of Mostra on Wednesday evening not to be "silent" and "not to be neutral in the war in Ukraine".
The President described Russia's war of aggression against his country as "a horror that has lasted not 120 minutes but for 189 days".
He then read the names of 358 children killed since the war began more than six months ago.
The French acting legend Catherine Deneuve, who was awarded a Golden Lion for her life's work in Venice, also made a political statement: Before the gala, the 78-year-old wore a shirt with a Ukraine flag.
Another prominent guest at the Lido was former US Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
