A 57-year-old trans woman was attacked by a youth group in a Bremen tram and seriously injured.

As the police announced on Monday, one of the young people hit the woman several times in the face with both fists during the incident on Saturday evening.

He was cheered on "loudly" by his almost 15 companions.

According to the police, members of the group had previously torn the wig off their victim's head and grossly insulted the woman.

It was only when other passengers stepped in that the attackers let go and fled the train.

The state security police in the Hanseatic city is investigating a case of hate crime.

According to witnesses, the youth who hit the woman is said to be between 14 and 16 years old.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious facial injuries.

The woman from Bremen was traveling on tram line 4 towards Neustadt at around 7.35 p.m. – the police are asking possible witnesses to get in touch.

Just a few days ago, a 25-year-old died in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, after an attack on the sidelines of an event for Christopher Street Day (CSD).

According to the police, he had put himself in front of participants who had been massively homophobic insulted by a 20-year-old.

The 20-year-old then hit him several times in the face, whereupon he fell over.

He died later in hospital.

The alleged attacker is in custody.
