(ANSA) - LONDON, 09 SEPT - King Charles has arrived at BuckinghamPalace to formally take possession of the throne inherited from Queen Elizabeth, who died yesterday in Balmoral.

The new ruler, dressed in the dark suit of mourning, was greeted by the crowd huddled behind the barriers near the entrance and stopped to exchange words and handshakes with different people: at the same time receiving smiles, good wishes and messages of condolence.

    Carlo first approached the people crowded outside alone, while his wife Camilla remained behind him a few meters away, as if wanting to leave the scene to him in this moment of transition.

Then the couple, now a real couple, got together to review the bouquets of flowers and messages left by their subjects and admirers in memory of Queen Elizabeth in the past thousands of hours.

    There was no lack of shouts of "hurray" and invocations 'God save the King' from the square in the direction of the incoming king, who finally walked the entrance path to the palace side by side with the queen consort.

    The day - unlike the gray and stormy weather yesterday, in the hours of the announcement of the death of Elizabeth II - is illuminated today by glimpses of sunshine;

while the presence of people around Buckingham Palace remains massive.

    Carlo, after having landed in London with a special flight from Aberdeen, where he had arrived after the wake of the previous hours in front of his mother's coffin in the Scottish residence of Balmoral, reached the palace in procession, aboard a vintage Royal Rolls Royce with Camilla .
