Land under in Pakistan, drought in China, fire in California: Disasters provided dramatic images this week. You can see what other strong motives there were here.

Furious

Gasoline prices have risen almost all over the world as a result of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.

Protests also broke out in Banda Aceh in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Students demonstrated there.

country under

A residential area in the Dadu district of Pakistan's Sindh province is engulfed in floods after heavy monsoon rains.

It is the worst flooding in the country's history.

Millions of people in the plains of southern Pakistan were trapped between the floodwaters.

In the mountainous north, the Army used helicopters to fly rescue missions to remote locations.

Instead of going to school in her home country, she is now going to school in the capital, Bucharest.

On dry land

People sit in a dried-up river bed of an arm of the Yangtze River near Wuhan in central China's Hubei Province.

In the Yangtze River basin, 45 percent less rain than usual fell this summer, and because of the throttled hydroelectric power plants, electricity is also scarce.

Skeptical

Together with more than 50,000 other soldiers, he took part in the large-scale maneuver "Vostok" near Vladivostok.

escape from the fire

Horses seek shelter from a forest fire near Hemet, California.

After a summer of wildfires around the world, this fire is also a challenge for firefighters - and a catastrophe for people and nature.

Around 2,000 hectares of land were devastated, thousands of houses were evacuated and schools were closed.

Against the flames

A fire department plane drops powder to help fight the blaze near the California city of Hemet.

California is currently suffering from a heat wave with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40 degrees.

In the western United States, there has been a devastating drought for years, which favors forest fires.

With a catchy tune on the shore

If you watch the »Umbrella Academy« series, you might get a catchy tune about this city for a while afterwards: »Istanbul was Constantinople / Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople«, it says.

To put it more precisely for this recording: These people are sitting on Eminonu Pier, i.e. on the banks of the Bosphorus in Istanbul – not Constantinople.

Plush everywhere

Employees at the Yalon Toy plush factory in Yangzhou in the province of Jiangsu in China.

The animals are mainly sold to the United States, the EU and Japan.

The company is the designated maker of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games mascot - and during the 2022 Winter Games, the company received official approval to manufacture Bing Dwen Dwen plushies.

Hundreds of thousands made it onto the market.

Nothing to measure

The Swiss glacier measurement network Glamos has given up on the Corvatsch glacier in the canton of Graubünden.

This summer even 7000 year old layers of ice melted.

Now the ice is missing to attach the devices of the measuring points.

A part of the glacier remained under a protective fleece, which employees of the mountain railways are now removing.

Skiing is practiced there in winter.

Daring and protected

"I need a hat to protect me," said a character invented by Janosch.

With the veil blowing, the protective garment becomes daring.

But maybe the fashion label QiLin wanted to express something completely different with this creation presented in Beijing?

Bacteria and elders barely visible to the eye had stained the ponds pink.

Traditionally, Albania produces sea salt - which is exported to western countries.

Don't fall out of character

The 79th Venice International Film Festival is on the home stretch.

Luca Dimic and Gerhard Liebmann (from left) also walked the red carpet at the film premiere of the thriller »Master Gardener« – costumed as Mario Falak and Charles Eismayer.

The characters come from the Austrian feature film »Eismayer«, which also premiered in Venice these days.

They called for a “plant-based future” on a poster.

Because of the action, some members were arrested.

The hippopotamus is also worth a rhyme

»A weasel / sat on a pebble / in the middle of a trickle stream«, wrote Christian Morgenstern.

And if you continue this rhyme with a hippopotamus that has taken a seat in a stream in Kenya's Masai Mara National Park, you can also feel a bit like a poet.

Rock music fireworks

After a break due to the pandemic, fans celebrated the start of the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil.

It's not just one of the most important rock festivals in South America.

Contrary to the name, it also took place in Europe, more precisely: Lisbon and Madrid.

Mothers and babies wait under mosquito nets at a hospital in the Somali city of Baidoa.

The clinic is intended to help victims of the extreme drought in the African country.

The harvests are destroyed, which is why food prices are skyrocketing.

Seven million people (out of a total population of 16 million) are at risk of starvation.
