"Thank you for your advice and your contagious smile": Prince Harry's touching tribute to his "granny", Elizabeth II

Four days after the queen's death, the Duke of Sussex paid tribute to his grandmother in a very personal statement, published on Monday, September 12.

He praised his grandmother's "commitment", as well as "her contagious smile".

Prince Harry paid tribute to Elizabeth II in an official press release published on Monday, September 12.

A message in which he called the sovereign a “compass”, thanking his “granny” for her sense of duty.

“As we celebrate the life of my grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen, and mourn her loss, we are all reminded of the compass she represented to so many, through her commitment to service and duty,” said explained the husband of Meghan Markle, whose break with the royal family in 2020 shook the monarchy.

“I cherish these shared moments”

Prince Harry also reminisced about the impact of all the 'first encounters' he had with the monarch.

“Grandma, although this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first encounters, from my earliest childhood memories to when you became my Commander-in-Chief, to when you met my darling wife and hugged your great-grandchildren,” he continued.

Before adding: “I cherish these moments shared with you, and the many other special moments experienced in the meantime.

You are already sorely missed, not only by us, but also by the whole world.

And as these are first encounters, we now honor my father in his new role as King Charles III.”

A strong symbol, as relations between the Duke of Sussex and his father had recently become strained.

"Thank you for your commitment to serve," he concluded.

Thank you for your wise advice.

Thank you for your contagious smile.”

Since the "Megxit", the prince had admitted to having difficult relations with his father and Prince William, but had always stressed that he had kept good relations with the sovereign who died at the age of 96 in Scotland.

He had thus arrived at the Balmoral residence separately from the rest of the family and well after the death of the sovereign there.

A potential reconciliation

Since then, Prince William seems to have waved the white flag.

The Duke of Cornwall has thus invited his younger brother to come and meditate with him at Windsor Castle, in front of the flowerbed laid by Her Majesty's admirers, on Saturday September 10.

It was the couple's first public appearance since March 2020, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the UK.

The foursome were in Windsor, where William and Kate live with their three children and where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were staying while visiting the UK for charity events, but were originally only not expected to see each other.

The Royal Palace is now considering asking Princes William and Harry to walk side by side behind the Queen's coffin during the Queen's funeral scheduled for September 19.

King Charles III had meanwhile expressed in his first speech his “love” for the Sussexes.

So many signs of a potential reconciliation.
