Being able to shorten one's life when one suffers too much or when one fears an atrocious end is possible in Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Austria.

By opening the door to the possibility of "active assistance in dying, under certain very strict conditions", the National Ethics Committee (CCNE), which had been rather conservative on the issue until then, created a surprise: "We are not 'We weren't expecting it, finally it's moving' reacts Philippe Lohéac, general delegate of the ADMD (Association for the right to die with dignity) where we are nevertheless waiting to see.
The CCNE notes in particular, in its opinion, that this “assisted suicide” applies “to adults suffering from serious and incurable illnesses causing physical and/or psychological suffering that cannot be alleviated,
with a vital prognosis committed in the medium term (in a few weeks or a few months).
