The dishwasher has become indispensable in most households.

In order to save electricity, you should above all use the right program.

Regardless of whether you are single or a large family: a dishwasher makes everyday life easier for everyone.

Unfortunately, it also consumes a lot of electricity.

It is not for nothing that the dishwasher is one of the biggest energy guzzlers in the home, along with the refrigerator and tumble dryer.

However, you can take countermeasures with a few tricks and routines to ensure that your electricity bill does not get out of hand in times of rising energy prices.

With the right settings, you can save a lot of electricity in the dishwasher.

6 tips for saving electricity with the dishwasher

  • Load the dishwasher correctly:

If you only run your dishwasher half full, you need more rinse cycles overall - and that eats up a lot of electricity.

The same applies if too many dishes and cutlery end up in the dishwasher.

Then the water does not get everywhere, the dishes remain dirty and have to be washed again.

Here we explain how to load the dishwasher correctly.

  • Pre-washing heavily soiled dishes:

the sensors in modern dishwashers roughly detect how dirty pots, pans, etc. are. “Even a few heavily soiled items ensure that the dishwasher selects the most intensive program.

And that, of course, consumes the most electricity," says energy supplier

    Vattenfall

    .

Therefore, lightly pre-wash heavily soiled dishes by hand or remove leftovers with a napkin.

  • Use dishwasher salt: According to

    Ökotest

, a calcified dishwasher also increases

    electricity consumption.

It is therefore essential to use so-called regeneration salt, i.e. dishwasher salt, to soften the water and set the device to the local water hardness level in accordance with the operating instructions.

Dishwasher salt is only superfluous if the water is very soft.

  • Use Eco program:

Does your dishwasher have an Eco mode?

Then use this program as often as possible.

The Eco program heats the water less (usually to 45 to 50 degrees), but the rinse cycle takes a little longer.

Nevertheless, it noticeably reduces your power consumption in the household.

In fact, Eco rinse cycles draw even less electricity than short programs - this also applies to the washing machine.

  • Don't use the timer:

Even if it seems practical - don't use the timer on dishwashers.

As a result, the household appliances remain in standby mode, which in turn consumes electricity unnecessarily.

  • Connect to hot water:

Since dishwashers require most of the energy to heat up the water, it can make sense to connect the device to the hot water connection in the kitchen right away.

    According to

    Vatttenfall

, you save 20 to 30 percent of the electricity costs for the dishwasher.

In addition, the rinse cycle is shortened and the heating element is protected, which extends the service life of the device.

You can also save a lot of energy when cooking, for example by using the kettle to heat the pasta water.

If you want to lower your electricity bill while baking, you can reduce the temperature of many dishes and pastries.
