Potted plants can often be easily overwintered outdoors.

Lavender is very popular with hobby gardeners because of its wonderfully fragrant flowers in rich purple.

But the bees also "fly" on it, as it serves the insects as a valuable source of food.

To ensure that the Mediterranean plant makes it through the winter well, you only have to take a few precautions.

Then potted lavender can also overwinter on the balcony or on the terrace.

How to overwinter real lavender on the balcony

To protect real lavender (

Lavandula angustifolia

) in a pot from frost and cold, it is best to wrap the pot in a layer of bubble wrap and then cover the whole thing with jute fabric.

You can also use winter protection fleece instead of sacking.

These materials insulate, so the plant has it a little warmer.

Occasional freezing is not a problem for the semi-shrub anyway.

Then place the lavender in a dry and sheltered place, close to the wall of the house.

Even in winter you should water the flower occasionally so that the plant ball does not dry out.

French lavender needs warmer temperatures to overwinter

The much more sensitive French lavender (

Lavandula stoechas

), on the other hand, needs it a little warmer: it hibernates best at temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.

In very mild regions, older, well-rooted plants can hibernate outdoors if they are protected from the cold with fleece or fir branches.

Otherwise, a winter garden or bright, cold rooms in the house are suitable as a winter location.

Don't forget to water, even French lavender should never dry out completely.

In February you can slowly get the subshrub used to the warmth again before it moves back outside later in the year.

Spring is also the ideal time to cut lavender for the first time.
