Based on the invitation addressed to President Bashar al-Assad to participate in the Summit on Transforming Education from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Syria will participate in the summit with a government educational delegation headed by Dr. Darem Tabbaa, Minister of Education and head of the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO.

The Education Transformation Summit will be held in New York from the 16th of this September to the 19th of this month on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the context of two challenges facing ensuring quality education and lifelong learning for all. The first is that the world is going through a global learning crisis in the midst of A deeply unequal mechanism deprives hundreds of millions of children and young people of their right to a quality education, leaving many goals associated with sustainable development off track.

The second challenge is also that the learning crisis is part of a broader challenge in the wake of the turmoil that affected education due to the Corona pandemic and the wars and disasters that the world is witnessing today, which requires bringing about the desired transformation in education, developing a common vision for the future of education, strengthening political and public commitment and mobilizing collective capacity to achieve that vision. From now until 2030 so that educational systems are able to bring about positive change in society.

The Ministry of Education had formed working groups that included participants from various ministries, partner international organizations and local community institutions. It conducted national consultations that lasted for months and worked on setting points related to identifying challenges, problems, procedures that were put in place to address and implemented, and the future needs required to improve and develop education, in the areas of commitment to equality in education. Education, developing the teaching profession, renewing curricula and teaching methods, directing digital transformation towards fair and equitable learning, financing education and managing education as a public good, as well as holding discussions related to the reasons that called for the transformation of education and the extent of the response related to the Corona pandemic, and discussing the goal of the statement of national commitment presented to the Education Transformation Summit .

These consultations resulted in the completion of a Syrian working paper entitled “Transforming Education in the Light of Wars and Disasters / Education in the Syrian Arab Republic as an example / in both Arabic and English.

The paper consists of several chapters: “Transforming learning, the future of youth, learning, life skills, sustainable development and foundational education from the perspective of lifelong learning, employability skills, entrepreneurship and learning for sustainable development, including environmental education and the future plan to enhance the concept of lifelong learning.” As well as seeking to Inclusive, equitable, safe and healthy schools, developing the role of teachers and the teaching profession, financing education, and advancing education through health-promoting schools and digital learning.”

The participating Syrian delegation includes Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, Secretary of the National Committee for UNESCO, Dr. Nidal Hassan, and Director of Planning and International Cooperation Ghassan Shgari, in addition to a youth delegation that includes the CEO of the Syrian Trust for Development Shadi Al-Ashi, President of the National Union of Syrian Students Darine Suleiman and President of the Revolution Youth Union, Sumer Dhaher and head of the Vanguards of the Baath Organization, Dr. Muhammad Ezzat Arabi Katbi.
