Taiwan has been hit by a series of severe earthquakes.

The tremors reached a magnitude of up to 6.8 on the Richter scale - the epicenter was 42 kilometers north of Taitung in southeastern Taiwan.

Homes and roads were damaged in eastern Hualien County.

Landslides blocked traffic.

A train derailed in Taitung after a platform collapsed.

Rail traffic has been temporarily suspended.

A bridge collapsed in the village of Yuli.

The earthquake also destroyed an elementary school there, to which several people had saved themselves.

Original sound teacher:

"Because it was pretty bad in their own homes, some parents ran onto the school grounds to get shelter during the tremor."

According to the authorities, at least one person died in the earthquake and 79 were injured.

Aftershocks continued on Monday morning.

Nevertheless, rescue and clean-up work began immediately in the affected areas.

The tremors of the earthquakes were felt even in Taipei.

Buildings swayed in the capital, about 200 kilometers from the epicenter.

Japan temporarily issued a tsunami warning for Okinawa and other southern islands.

The Taiwan quake struck just seven kilometers deep, which added to the intensity.

Due to Taiwan's location on the border between two tectonic plates, the island state is particularly prone to earthquakes.
