A woman has won the Nobel, a woman who does not write novels (and who, in my opinion, with her books certifies in a certain way, once again, but this time perhaps for real, the end of the novel as the main instrument to reach to the truth), a woman who combines the two essential qualities that occur in great writers: passion and intelligence.

I don't know how I got to Ernaux, I just know that one day, suddenly, I was reading a book,
Pure Passion
, in which the story of a sexual passion was told for the first time in a totally revolutionary way.
It wasn't coarse or coarse, it didn't rejoice in lurid details, it didn't justify itself, it didn't talk about love, it had a hardness, an honesty and a parsimony that I had not found before in any other book.
It must be very difficult to be as intelligent as Ernaux and not become an exhibitionist, it must be very difficult to be as lucid and refrain from giving any kind of lesson, it must be very difficult to have Ernaux's miraculous gift for putting phrases and words together and not extend, always be brief and precise, exact, beautiful.
There was also another thing: Ernaux talked about sex, his sex, his sexual relations.
Ernaux (one of the privileged minds of the century) was not ashamed to show her passion for passion, she did not mix it with politics (although she is an author who is very interested in politics), nor with morality, nor with feminism, I wasn't trying to whitewash it.
Ernaux fucked.
The smartest woman of the century fucked.
No one has written about sex, desire and passion better than Ernaux, perhaps Philip Roth is up there with her.
You have to be very brave not to hide behind your own intelligence, behind your own talent, in Ernaux nudity is total and, however, there is not the least exhibitionism, nor the least self-indulgence.
Ernaux always has a knife in his hands.
And she nails it.
Great literature is nothing else.
