, by Philippe Leroux, at Angers-Nantes Opéra.
We went there with all the more apprehension as the previous occasion when a composer had tackled a piece by Claudel,
Le Soulier de satin
, at the Palais Garnier, had ended in disappointment.
Marc-André Dalbavie, in fact, had sinned by excess of respect towards the text, to the point that we had the impression of attending the performance of a play with incidental music, and not an opera.
In Nantes, Philippe Leroux did not fall into this trap.
To tell the truth, he did not fall into any trap!
God knows, however, that the genre tends to those who approach it without having given enough thought to the question.
First condition of success: a strong subject.
