In gabardine, wool or cotton, the trench coat has been a timeless wardrobe staple for over a hundred years.
However, it is far from the parades that this garment made its debut in clothing.
We are then in the middle of the First World War, in 1914. The British army commissions the company of Thomas Burberry to make a coat intended for the soldiers sent to the front.
This is how the trench coat (to translate: trench coat) was born: a windproof and waterproof piece designed to be practical and utilitarian.
The great cinema of the trench
When peace returned, the trench coat swapped its military design for more urban looks.
And was later declined in a feminine version, becoming in the process a true emblem of English chic.
It experienced a new boom in cinema from the 1950s. We see it being worn by Sophia Lauren in

in 1958, or in 1960 in

, enveloping Marilyn Monroe.
And although the play ran out of steam in the 1980s, it returned to the front of the catwalks and film sets at the start of the new millennium.

in 2003, or in wool to keep warm on Keira Knightley a few years later on the poster for
Last Night
.
From now on, the coat is a classic that the actors of the fashion world like to reinterpret.
