Shortly before the advertising-financed subscription starts, Netflix announced a new feature that is intended to make it easier for users to move a profile.
But what exactly are profile transfers and what needs to be considered now?
For years there has been speculation as to when the streaming giant Netflix, which will be offering the basic subscription with advertising for EUR 4.99 from November, will no longer accept the widespread sharing of passwords as quietly as before.
While the company was extremely lenient with accounts shared among friends, especially during its growth phase, there have been increasing signs for some time that a change of direction is imminent.
Now the streaming service has announced a new feature that could signal a major shift.
What are profile transfers?
Some users have already received the email, for others it will probably be sent soon.
In the usual manner, Netflix is gradually unlocking members' profiles for new features.
This time it is about the so-called profile transfers.
This allows someone to move their profile, including watchlist, recommendations, title history, settings and saved games to a new account.
According to the company, this is intended to make things easier for couples who are separating, for example.
However, it is not possible to transfer a profile to an existing account with this function.
A newly concluded subscription is therefore a prerequisite.
It is also not possible to duplicate a profile with the new function.
