It's never too early to plan your next year's trips.

Take for example National Geographic magazine, which already now, at the end of October, publishes the list of the best destinations for 2023, with 25 must-see destinations.

This year, the theme leading the list is respect for the land, cultures and peoples.

This list includes five different categories:

culture, nature, adventure, community and family.

One way or another, the hope is that the year 2023 will symbolize not only the return to the routine of trips and vacations, but also the new joy of discovery.

"When you're excited about something, you treat it with respect," says Amy Elifio, senior editor of National Geographic Travel.

"And that's something we want to encourage through this list."

Focusing on communities

The list focuses on destinations where there are community-led conservation efforts, healing and heritage journeys, and of course sustainability.

In this regard, this year National Geographic introduced a new category in the list, replacing "sustainability" with the "community" category, which is broader and more inclusive.

It is about expanding the focus for those who strive for sustainable goals, from accessible travel to supporting local businesses.

The theme of existence is actually intertwined in each of the categories.

For example, destinations in the "community" category include Ghana (emphasis on heritage travelers in West Africa) and Alberta in Canada, which is the leader in everything related to Native American culture.

"They actually made the travelers learn the stories and ways of life of the First Nations (a term that describes indigenous peoples in Canada) in North America, and their vibrant and contemporary cultures," Elifio said.

Another example is Laos, where a new high-speed train makes the country more accessible for visitors and brings economic opportunity to benefit locals.

In the Dodecanese Islands of Greece, Karpathos stands out for sustainable tourism led by female leadership.

From the Giza Museum in Egypt to solitude in the nature of the USA

The CNN website states that the new National Geographic list is not without new and great attractions.

For example, the Great Egyptian Museum ("Giza Museum") outside of Cairo contributes to Egypt's appearance on the 2023 list in the "Culture" category.

The city of Charleston in South Carolina, in the United States, will soon serve as the home of the International African American Museum, which is scheduled to open this January.

The large natural spaces of the United States also appear on the list in two categories, with an emphasis on distance from the crowds.

Home to five national parks, Utah is a huge draw, and it appears in the "adventure" category, in part thanks to its efforts to direct tourists to some of its lesser-known areas, in order to combat the phenomenon of overtourism.

For example, on Utah's tourism website, there is a page dedicated entirely to what is called "responsible travel".

Among other things, surfers are asked to consider their impact on the space, with questions such as "Am I doing what I can to avoid crowded places?"

Slovenia, which is considered a long-standing leading destination when it comes to sustainable tourism, combines bike trails with visits to wineries, cheese producers and other food producers, in a way that earns it its own slot in the "nature" category, with a culinary bonus.

The Scottish Highlands (Scottish Highlands), the spectacular volcanic archipelago in the Azores of Portugal and Botswana entered the "Teva" list due to their efforts in the field of conservation and sustainability.

Peru: The site that competes with Machu Picchu

Columbia has been in the spotlight since the release of Disney's animated film "Encanto," which makes its selection in the "Family" category well-timed.

In California, San Francisco's Crosstown Trail is another perfect place for a family adventure.

And speaking of "adventure," that category also includes Choquequirao in Peru, an Inca site rivaling Machu Picchu, which is becoming more accessible and encouraging economic development.

New Zealand, which has long been considered the world's adventure capital, also entered the list.

Asia, which was slower in terms of opening its borders after the peak of the epidemic, appears prominently in the "culture" category.

For example, the city of Busan (Busan) in South Korea, appears in the category thanks to breweries, a leading film festival in the Asian continent, and more.

While China remains closed to international tourism, the Longmen Grottoes in Henan Province have also entered the "culture" list thanks to new technology that complements the experience of visiting this unique site.

becomes more accessible and also encourages economic development.
