Do you like to cook dishes with mushrooms?

It would be a shame to throw away any leftovers, but there's an old rule that says you can't reheat mushrooms - is that true?

In autumn in particular, mushroom pickers go in search of delicious button mushrooms and tasty porcini mushrooms.

But you don't have to be a mushroom connoisseur to prepare mushroom dishes such as fine venison goulash with mushrooms or bread dumplings with mushroom bourguignon and pear red cabbage.

But one rule holds true: According to an old kitchen wisdom, prepared mushrooms must not be reheated.

But is that even true?

Why shouldn't mushrooms be reheated?

You can read the answers to these questions and under what conditions you can reheat mushroom dishes below.

Under three conditions, you are allowed to reheat mushrooms

The wisdom that you shouldn't reheat mushrooms comes from a time before refrigerators existed.

Back then, it would have been extremely dangerous to keep leftover mushrooms, heat them up again and eat them.

Nowadays, however, you can safely reheat and eat mushroom dishes the next day – as long as you observe three prerequisites.

1. Tip for reheating mushrooms: Store in the fridge

The first requirement that must be met before you can reheat mushrooms is that you keep the leftovers of the mushroom dish in the refrigerator.

When you have finished eating and the leftovers have cooled down, it is best to put them in a sealable container, which you then put in the fridge.

In this way, the mushroom dish can be kept for at least another day, then warmed up and finally eaten - as long as you observe the other two requirements.

2. Tip for reheating mushrooms: Do not microwave

The second condition that you should keep if you want to reheat mushrooms is that you do not use the microwave to do it.

This is because microwaves do not heat the mushroom dish evenly.

It is therefore possible that germs are not killed.

To reheat the mushrooms, choose a pot or pan instead.

This also has the advantage that if there aren't enough leftovers for everyone, you can add other ingredients if necessary to keep everyone full.

Tip 3 for reheating mushrooms: Just once

One last tip to keep in mind when reheating mushrooms – dishes that contain mushrooms should only be reheated once.

So only reheat as much of the leftovers as you will actually eat.

Repeated heating can transform the protein of the mushrooms into intolerable substances and it would be a shame if you ended up having to throw away the mushroom dish after all.
