In the twilight (10/26/2022)

It looks like a natural idyll: the outlines of trees and a seagull stand out against the sun.

In fact, there should be a lot of crowds just a short distance away: the photo was taken in Vatican City, before the Pope's weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square.

Soft Frost (10/25/2022)

Hoar frost covered the leaves in a garden in the early morning - like small, fine hairs it lays over nature.

In many places, the temperatures of the month that is also called October summer make you forget that it is actually autumn.

Here for example in Moscow.

Snow Escape (10/23/2022)

The new ski season for racing professionals has begun.

The fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable venues for such events in October was also evident in Sölden am Rettenbachferner in Austria.

In times of global warming, the mountains here presented themselves less icy than one may know from earlier years, more with exposed boulder fields.

The organizers try to secure the ski season with snow depots.

Black Death (10/16/2022)

"Vitico Petróleo" - this is how this flamingo was christened by Venezuelan environmentalists who found it on the shore of Lake Maracaibo.

His last name refers to the oil that is extracted from the inland sea in the northwest of the country, which kills numerous animals.

The rescue of Vitico, which a fisherman found, also failed: he died while trying to clean it.

The environmentalists and local authorities appealed to the state oil company PDVSA to clean up pollution on the lake's beaches.

La république en marche (14.10.2022)

That's probably not what the previous name of Emmanuel Macron's party (in German: The Republic on the Move) meant.

In France, more cars are currently being pushed than usual. The TotalEnergies refinery workers are on strike, which is why the price of gas has climbed to over 3 euros in some cases – and many petrol stations are running out of fuel.

(By the way: La République En Marche has been called Renaissance since last month.)

Eat my sins!

(04.10.2022)

In the city of Bnei Brak near Tel Aviv, ultra-Orthodox Jews have gathered to indulge in an old tradition: for the Tashlich ceremony, they go to a body of water after the Mincha prayer on the first day of the New Year.

There they shake out their clothes and throw any crumbs that are in them into the water.

In doing so, they symbolically get rid of their sins and sink them.

Here the fish benefit from the missteps - they treat themselves to a snack.
