A 34-year-old man from Stadtallendorf in Hesse is suspected of killing his estranged wife on the street.

He is said to have ambushed her on Sunday night and killed her with 41 knife wounds.

As the police in Marburg announced on Monday, the alleged perpetrator met the woman on Saturday evening in a bar in Stadtallendorf.

He asked the 28-year-old to leave the bar with him to talk.

The woman refused, after which her ex-partner went out alone.

When the woman later left the bar and took a taxi home, the 34-year-old is said to have ambushed her.

While she was unlocking the front door, he approached her from behind and stabbed her with a 19-centimeter kitchen knife, the statement said.

The woman died of organ injuries and severe blood loss.

A later autopsy revealed 41 puncture and cut wounds.

The man turned himself in to the Stadtallendorf police station shortly after the crime.

He is now being investigated for murder.

He is in custody.

According to police, the couple had been separated since the beginning of the year.

According to initial investigations, the motive for the crime was the separation caused by the victim.
