Despite the boom in poker since the end of the 2000s, female players, amateurs or professionals, are rare in international tournaments.
"Men underestimate us, we are belittled", assures Rosalie Petit, coach and player present at the Winamax Poker Open in Bratislava (Slovakia).
“We often face sexist comments (…) especially if we have not yet proven ourselves”, she continues, deploring the “daily misogyny” present around the tables.
Contrary to "more physical sports, (...) in poker nothing indicates that it is done for men and not for women, we are all equal with our intellectual capacities", recalls Alexane, new professional player of Team Winamax .
For Leo Margets, world champion who has accumulated nearly two million dollars in competition earnings, "nothing has changed" since 2007, the year of her debut.
Even if the Spaniard admits to having suffered very few misogynistic remarks in her career, she expected to see “more and more women in the middle” with the rise of her discipline.
"Except it didn't go as planned," she says smiling.

According to several studies, men still represent more than 90% of registered players in competition, a similar trend for online poker.
So, to encourage women to join this sport, "Ladies" tournaments are regularly organized.
“The atmosphere is more relaxed than with the men, advances Hélène, accustomed to the gathering.
It allows us to find ourselves among ourselves, (…) to develop ourselves completely.
Moreover, “the female transition” is underway, according to her, thanks to a new generation “more open than the old one.
Gone are the days of card games in cellars where we smoked cigars, with online poker, it's open to everyone”.
