Devour, fall in love, never forget - the novels by Mareike Fallwickl are something very special because they fulfill the three most important attributes that, for me, make a good book stand out from the crowd:
Unique language style that ensures recognition value
Suspense to the last page
Important and timely message
After I first became aware of the Austrian author through the Instagram book club
girls who read
the 2018 novel “Dunkelgrün fast schwarz”, I couldn’t help but read other books by Mareike Fallwickl.
Such as “The light is much brighter here”, which was released in 2019.
In 2022 the time had finally come again and readers could look forward to a new novel by the author nominated for the Austrian Book Prize: "The Anger That Remains".
Mareike Fallwickl "The anger that remains": About the book
In addition to the language, the novel "The Anger That Remains" is particularly convincing due to the messages conveyed.

Helene, mother of three children, gets up at dinner, goes to the balcony and, without saying a word, throws herself to her death.
The family is in shock.
Suddenly they are missing everything that has held them together so far: love, care, security. Helene's best friend Sarah, who at the same time envied and felt sorry for Helene because of her family, is drawn into the maelstrom of grief and chaos.
Lola, Helene's eldest daughter, searches for a way to deal with her emotions and focuses on the emotion that is strongest: anger.Three women: One eludes what life demands of a mother.
The other two, the daughter and the best friend, must find ways to close this gap.
Their fates intertwine in this moving and combative novel about what it means

Mareike Fallwickl "The anger that remains": My conclusion
The novel "The Anger That Remains" by Mareike Fallwickl picks up on some important and highly topical social phenomena that one basically cannot talk about too often.
Triple mom Helene is at the end of her strength, not least because of the corona pandemic.
Mental load is the keyword: The everyday life of many mothers consists of organizing and coordinating tasks, also known as care work, which men in particular do not or only rarely do.
It is therefore not surprising that the novel
speaks to the soul of many readers, for example on the

Definitely not an easy topic that is dealt with in Mareike Fallwickl's "The Anger That Remains", as the author herself knows:
It's going to be painful and nasty, it's going to hurt me and you too.
It will be fictional and still true.

I really liked the change of perspective and the associated lines of action and thought of the two generations - represented by daughter Lola and friend Sarah.
While Lola has lost her mother, Sarah struggles with her sudden motherhood.
Both have different ways of dealing with the loss.
What they have in common, however, is that the cause of all evil, according to the novel, is patriarchy.
But not only the women, in this case Sarah and Lola, suffer from this, but also the men.
Father Johannes is completely overwhelmed with the situation and simply doesn't know what else to do than asking the women in his life for help.

Even if "The Anger That Remains" is not a solution to gender-specific social problems, the novel at least draws attention to grievances and ensures that those affected do not feel left alone, similar to Mareike Fallwickl's short story "Tamina Blue", published by
DAS GRAMM.
It is also about feminism and patriarchy, and feminist voices are also heard in Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi's "The Lionesses of Afghanistan".
On the other hand, if you would like to read about strong images of women from the past, "Violeta" by bestselling author Isabel Allende or "The Daring" by Caroline Bernard is the best choice.
