What's going on at the Swedish furniture store?
The Billy shelf is considered a sales classic in the Ikea product range.
Nevertheless, the Scandinavians now dare the revolution and give "Billy" a complete makeover.
Munich - After more than 40 years, the Ikea bestseller - the Billy shelf - is getting a new coat of paint.
The Swedish furniture store Ikea has announced that it will revise the bookcase.
According to the group, the most important change will be that the previously installed wood veneer will be replaced by paper foil.
This change should not only make the shelf more stable, but also more sustainable.
In this way, waste in production can be “minimized”, explains the Swedish furniture store.
Ikea says it wants to be “a fully recyclable company” by 2030.
At the same time, the nails for attaching the back panel are replaced with snap fasteners.
Above all, this should make assembly easier, or to be more precise: multiple dismantling and reassembly.
This will "significantly extend" Billy's useful life," the furniture store justified this step.
As before, "Billy" is sold in a white version, but with the new material Ikea also introduces other wood imitations: black and dark brown oak, walnut, birch.

Billy Regal: Market launch planned for 2024
In the future, most of the materials used for “Billy” will come from renewable sources.
However, the market launch is not planned until 2024.
The shelving system has been an absolute hit since it was introduced in 1978 - worldwide.
The shelf parts are plastic-coated or veneered chipboard.
But "Billy" is not the only piece of furniture that can look back on a long history with ups and downs, other pieces of furniture have also become a testament to the times and have become famous over the years.
