The year 2023 is fast approaching.

Even before the start of the new year, employees should take a look at the new calendar.

Munich - Shortly before the end of 2022, it can be worthwhile for employees to look ahead to the new year 2023.

As few vacation days as possible - but a lot of free time?

Then the holidays should be used to build bridges.

Which holidays are there to get the most out of 2023?

An overview.

Vacation in 2023: Real relaxation with a minimum of two weeks at a time

"It should be at least two weeks of vacation a year, three weeks would be great," said Prof. Dirk Windemuth, Director at the Institute for Work and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IAG).

Employees who have the choice ultimately benefit from longer vacation blocks.

The background: A real recovery from work does not set in after a day or two, but only after some time.

It usually takes at least two weeks to really switch off.

Windemuth added: "After a longer break, the recovery effect also lasts longer."

Holidays 2023: A bridging day can already be used in January

In order to get the most out of shorter and longer breaks, free bridging days around public holidays are a good idea.

There will be a first opportunity for this in January 2023.

Holiday in January: Epiphany

Get a total of nine free days in a row with the use of four vacation days?

Epiphany

on January 6, 2023 makes this possible for

people in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt.

The regional public holiday falls on a Friday next year: a long weekend is therefore guaranteed anyway.

Holiday 2023: Take advantage of public holidays in March, April and May

  • International Women's Day (regional)

: From 2023, March 8th will no longer only be a public holiday in Berlin, but also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

It falls on a Wednesday next year.

If you live in the two federal states, you can get nine days off in a row with the use of four days of vacation (March 4th to March 12th).

  • Easter

: The use of vacation days can really pay off here.

With Good Friday (April 7) and Easter Monday (April 10), employees with four days of vacation have ten days of free time from April 1 to 10.

If you add four more days and use a total of eight vacation days, you can enjoy 16 days off (April 1 to April 16) in a row.

  • Labor

    Day

(May 1) falls on a Monday in 2023.

For four days of vacation, employees get nine days off (April 29 to May 7).

  • Ascension Day

(May 18) falls on a Thursday, as it does every year.

Thus, the use of one day of vacation is suitable for a long weekend (May 18 to May 21).

  • Pentecost:

The Pentecost festival traditionally has two public holidays - Whit Sunday and Whit Monday.

In the year 2023 Whit Monday falls on May 29th.

If you take the four following days off, you can stay away from work for nine days at a time.

  • Corpus Christi (regional)

: June 8 is a public holiday in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

It falls on a Thursday in 2023 and is ideal for a long weekend.

If you combine this with Pentecost, you can get a total of 16 days off in a row with eight days of vacation.

The regional holiday on October 31 falls on a Tuesday in 2023.

Employees in Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia can gain nine days of free time at a time (October 28 to November 5) by using four days of vacation.

  • On

    All Saints' Day

(November 1), employees in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland have a day off.

The holiday falls on a Wednesday.

With four days of vacation, you get nine days off in a row.

Two vacation days result in an extra-long weekend that lasts five days.

  • At the turn of the year 2023/2024, Christmas

    and

    New Year

    are cheaper again for employees.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on Monday and Tuesday.

Three days of vacation mean a free Christmas week.

With seven days of vacation from December 23, 2023 to January 7, 2024, there are a total of 16 days off in a row.

While some are already planning their vacation, others are worried about Christmas 2022. The background is the energy crisis: will it stay dark for Christmas?
