(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, NOVEMBER 04 - Aeroflot, the Russian flag carrier, returns to operate at the international airport of Beirut, in Lebanon, more than six months after the suspension of Russian aircraft in one of the main airports between Europe and the Middle East in follow-up to Western sanctions against Russia.
This was reported by the Lebanese government agency NNA, which cites the management of the Beirut airport and the Lebanese transport ministry.
The decision was made after a meeting between the Lebanese transport minister, Ali Hamiye, the Russian ambassador in Beirut Alexander Rudakov, and Aeroflot general manager Sergei Prosvinov.
Russia has lobbied Lebanese authorities to resume civilian air links between Moscow and Beirut, recalling that Russia has donated grain and fuel to Lebanon, a country in economic collapse for three years and in financial default.
The Russian representatives in Lebanon also reminded the Lebanese authorities of their willingness to conduct mediation in any future negotiations with Syria for the sharing of energy resources off the Lebanese and Syrian coasts.
Beirut Airport reports that Aeroflot will return to operation from 1 December next year with three direct flights per week.
