In a few days, the World Cup will start in Qatar.

But real World Cup fever may not arise among many fans.

Not even at Kaufland.

Dresden – The 2022 World Cup is getting closer: the ball will be rolling in Qatar from November 20, but the first World Cup in an Arab country has been criticized.

The country's disastrous handling of the construction workers at the World Cup stadiums has been sharply condemned several times.

The fact that Qatar has criminalized the LGTBQ+ community also drew a lot of criticism.

In a letter to the football associations of the World Cup participants, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino recently called for the critical tones towards the host country to be silenced during the tournament.

On the other hand, in Munich and other cities, restaurants have decided to boycott the controversial World Cup and forego public viewing.

In German supermarkets and discounters, however, consumers should also be able to buy items for the World Cup.

Rewe, Lidl and others offer merchandising for the most important football tournament in the world.

And the 2022 World Cup has already arrived at Kaufland.

A customer from Dresden posted a picture on Twitter on November 6th – exactly two weeks before the start of the tournament.

This shows a sales corner in a Kaufland branch.

According to him, the snapshot was taken on November 5th.

To his tweet he wrote: "If fan paraphernalia has been sold at a bargain price, it has so far happened after the German team has left.

In 2022 the stuff will be sold off weeks BEFORE the World Cup (yesterday at Kaufland).

Good."

The Kaufland customer also added the hashtag #BoycottQatar2022.

Apparently he is not a fan of the World Cup tournament in the emirate on the Arabian Peninsula.

And he wasn't entirely wrong in what he said.

Because on closer inspection, only red price tags were attached to the products in the World Cup fan corner.

In many cases, a price reduction of more than 50 percent could be seen.

Football World Cup in Qatar: The host country bought fans for good social media press

Quite astonishing given that the opening match of the World Cup between hosts Qatar and Ecuador will only take place on November 20th.

Is this another sign that real World Cup fever may not arise for many football fans?

The suspicion that the enthusiasm for the World Cup in Qatar is generally limited, had recently strengthened an action by the organizer.

Qatar had paid the favor of some football fans and covered their travel expenses - in return, they are obliged to make a "positive contribution" to the tournament on social media platforms.
