"It's an honor – or a trap": Late-night presenter Jimmy Kimmel will lead the Oscar gala for the third time in 2023. In 2017 he tamed the chaos surrounding the announcement of the wrong winning film.

US presenter Jimmy Kimmel, 54, is scheduled to host the Oscars for the third time next year.

Kimmel will moderate the 95th edition of the event, scheduled for March 12, 2023, the film academy announced on Monday.

The presenter, who has his own late-night show on US television, previously hosted the Oscars in 2017 and 2018.

"Being invited a third time to host the Oscars is either an honor or a trap," Kimmel quipped.

"Anyway, I'm grateful to the Academy for asking me — so soon after all the good guys dropped out."

In 2022, for the first time in the history of the Academy Awards, a trio of women led the show: the actresses Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.

Previously, there had almost always been a celebrity host in the history of the Oscars - but in 2019, 2020 and 2021 there had been no host at all.

»With heart and humor«

The record holder as an Oscar presenter is comedian Bob Hope, who died in 2003 and hosted 19 times.

Billy Crystal did it nine times, Steve Martin three times.

Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg and John Stewart, among others, have already moderated the gala.

"We are extremely thrilled that we were able to get Jimmy to do this hat-trick on the world stage," said executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner in the statement, "We know he'll be fun and ready for anything!" At Kimmels first assignment as an Oscar presenter in 2017, the wrong title was given when the best picture was announced.

In 2018, the show was dominated by the #MeToo revelations.

The president of ABC, which will broadcast the gala on US television, said Kimmel's return was a dream come true.

"As we can see on his own show every night, Jimmy can treat anything with heart and humor at the same time," Craig Erwich was quoted as saying.

In 2022, ABC had the second-lowest ratings in Oscar history.

But in the days after the gala, the show made headlines because of the slap Will Smith gave comedian Chris Rock.
