The Brazilian singer Gal Costa, one of the most prominent voices in the Tropicalia movement in the country, passed away at the age of 77, the team accompanying her said today (Wednesday).

Maria da Guerresa Costa Pena Burgos was born in the city of Salvador in northeastern Brazil in 1945, and began her musical career in 1960, after meeting the singer Caetano Veloso.

Along with Maria Bettania, Gilberto Gil and Tom Zha, Costa was part of a wave of singers who became major players in the Tropicalia movement.

Tropicalia combined traditional Brazilian cultural expressions with radical aesthetic innovation, and also had social and political goals aimed at the Brazilian public under military rule, beginning in 1964.

Costa used to go on tour regularly, although she recently canceled her shows for the month of November so she could recover from a nose job.

The team that accompanied her did not specify the cause of her death.
