Ochratoxins
are a group of mycotoxins (mold toxins).
The corresponding molds are widespread in nature, for example some Aspergillus and penicillin species such as A. ochraceus or P. verrucosum, writes the consumer portal for

.
Ochratoxin A
(OTA) is the most common and important of the ochratoxins.
It can already be formed during the growth of plants if they are infested with mold.
However, like all mold toxins, it is mainly caused by incorrect handling of agricultural products.
For example, during harvest, drying, further processing, storage and transport.
It is mainly found in cereals, legumes, coffee, beer, grape juice, raisins and wine, cocoa products, nuts and spices.
Ochratoxin A causes kidney disease.
Kaufland recently had to recall its pistachios in numerous federal states because of possible mold toxins.
Also affected: the discounter Lidl.
Here it was rice packages that alarmed consumer advocates.
