Venice is making progress on the local public transport front, becoming one of the big European and world cities for the purchase of tickets.

Starting from September 2023, in fact, tourists and residents will be able to purchase travel tickets using debit and credit cards on board.

The collaboration agreement between the AVM group and a consortium of companies made up of Conduent and Elavon, which sees the direct participation of Visa, was presented this morning at Ca' Farsetti, the Town Hall.

The entire project, extended to the urban and extra-urban network of the central-southern area of the metropolitan city, provides for the establishment of a new integrated payment system for travel tickets using 'contactless' technology, and therefore with debit, credit, prepaid cards, smartphones and wearables.

The project, awarded through a public tender, does not only include the supply and installation of the new validators, which will be positioned in all circulating vehicles, in the People Mover stations and in the navigation network systems: in fact, in addition to the hardware component, will guarantee the creation of a system for calculating the best rate applicable to the customer, who will therefore be charged the most convenient amounts in relation to the number of validations carried out over one or more days.

In the tramway network, in the urban car network of Lido and Pellestrina, in navigation and in the People Mover it will be sufficient to 'tap' only uphill and continue to use the same bank card to travel without further charges during the period of validity of the pass.

For the occasional customer, it will be sufficient to bring their bank card close to the validator to settle the payment and be able to travel on board the vehicles.

Venezia Unica card holders must associate their profile in the reserved area of the company websites (www.avmspa.it and www.actv.it) with their bank card, and use this method to pay the urban or suburban ticket, with no need to pre-purchase it.

“The launch of contactless payment of travel documents in Venice makes it possible to capitalize on Visa's vast experience in this area, - underlines Stefano Stoppani, Country Manager Visa Italy - with over 100 authorized cities in Europe, many of which right in Italy". "It is a fundamental stage for the Municipality of Venice and the Avm group.

- commented the councilor for the budget, Michele Zuin - The convenience of paying for local public transport directly with a credit card on a magnetic reader is incredible, because it keeps us in step with the biggest European and world capitals".
