(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 23 - The first nine months of 2022 mark a strong recovery for the tourism sector, but the presence of customers in hospitality establishments is still around 39 million less than in 2019 (-10.3%).

The Istat detects it.

The balance from January to September closes with around 174 million Italian and 164 million foreign customers: a substantial rebalancing of the two components of demand but with a decrease of 6.7% and 13.8% respectively compared to 2019. There are around 196 million tourists in the summer quarter, 4.7% less than the record pre-pandemic figure of around 205 million reached in 2019.

From the surveys of the statistical institute it also emerges that the presences in non-hotel establishments have returned to pre-pandemic levels (136 million in the first 9 months of 2022 against 139 million in the same period of 2019) while in the hotel establishments there are still about 35 million presences.

Shorter holidays are also being taken: the recovery of tourist travel in the first nine months of 2022 was driven by short holidays, with stays of one to three nights, which recorded an increase of 46.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Then there is also the employment vulnerability still below the pre-Covid levels: in the first half of 2022, in the enlarged tourism industry there are still 88,000 employees missing (-4.4%) compared to 2019 when the sector had almost 2 million (approximately 7% of employment in the Services).
