A violent storm caused chaos in large parts of the USA on the Christmas weekend.

Like here in upstate New York, the extreme cold, heavy snowfalls and freezing winds led to power outages.

In the city of Denver, temperatures fell by around 40 degrees within 24 hours as the Arctic cold front passed through.

Countless roads were closed on Christmas Eve due to heavy snowfall or dangerously icy conditions.

According to media reports, there was a mass collision on a highway in Ohio.

At least one person died in the accident.

According to US media, the number of deaths across the country rose to 17 on Saturday night.

The cause in almost all cases was weather-related traffic accidents, it said.

At many airports in the country, ice and snow messed up travelers' plans: According to the flight data website FlightAware, more than 5,000 flights were canceled on Friday, and almost 9,000 were delayed.

Passenger

»Our airport in South Dakota was closed.

So we drove to Omaha, Nebraska, caught a flight there and then flew to DC.

Delay in DC and here we are.«

Passenger:

"With all the weather we're having right now, we're really glad we made it."

The US weather service spoke of a "historic" event.

But just as quickly as the cold snap hit the United States, it could be over.

In many places it should be 20 to 30 degrees warmer by the weekend.
