Chords, past participles... the most common mistakes in CM2 dictation

If the level of spelling has been deteriorating in CM2 for decades, the most common mistakes remain the same. We pass the red pen s

This Thursday, Pap Ndiaye presents the outlines of his "spelling plan", dedicated to alleviating the difficulties of schoolchildren at the end of primary school.

The circular should mark the return of a brief daily dictation, in particular.

The exercise seems, it is true, more and more difficult to succeed for CM2: the same dictation is carried out, since the end of the 1980s, before entering college, and the number of mistakes has almost doubled since 35 years, from 10.7 in 1987 to 19.4 faults in 2021.

The difficulties remain more or less the same with the notebook.

The stumbling blocks for our little darlings have not changed much, chords and participles passed in mind.

A past participle that still does not pass

"She may have seen them!"

exclaims a certain Martine in this short text of 67 words.

The agreement of the past participle to "see" with "the" already weighed down the dictation of more than two-thirds of students in 1987. Only 17% of CM2 students in 2021 managed to avoid this pitfall.

The same concern for agreement of the past participle for kids who would have "certainly been lost" and who would not have "still found their way", which causes concern for more than 6 out of 10 students in 2021.

We do not forget the S in the plural!

Since they are two to be subject to anguish, "Dad and mom, worried" agrees in the plural.

It was already the second most committed fault in 1987. It then made fall 54% of CM2 in 1987, but they are more than 75% to be mistaken today.

Conversely, less concern for the fundamentals "dad", "mum", "the", "the", "the", "don't" or "not", which pass in 90% of the dictations.

The circular presented this Thursday will have to present how to find the time necessary to achieve these additional writing times in already busy schedules.
